We present to you a map of Britain from 1650, the work of the renowned Dutch cartographer John Blaeu. Blaeu, the son of the famous cartographer Willem Janszoon Blaeu, was a prominent member of the family’s cartographic workshop, which in the 17th century was among the most respected in Europe.

The map shows the British Isles with a detailed representation of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The edges of the map are decorated with illustrations depicting the founders of the seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms on the left side, while the right side shows scenes of their conversion to Christianity.
In the mid-17th century, Britain was undergoing significant political and social change, including the English Civil War and the establishment of the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell. Blaeu’s map provides an insight into the geopolitical situation of the time, showing the territorial boundaries and administrative divisions that were current.
This map is an important historical document that reflects the understanding of the geography and political structure of Britain in the 17th century.
