Brief description of the map:

We present to you a part of Peutinger’s map from 1598, which shows the area of Istria and Rome. This map is a replica of an ancient Roman road map known as the Tabula Peutingeriana, which dates back to the 3rd or 4th century.

Year of original:

1598

Original author:

Marcus Welser, a German humanist and historian, who first published a complete version of the Peutinger map.

Place of issue:

Augsburg, Germany

Technique:

Copper engraving, which enables a precise and detailed representation of geographical elements.

Content:

The map shows a network of Roman roads connecting different parts of the Empire, including Istria and Rome. Stations, cities and the distances between them are shown, which provides an insight into the transport infrastructure of the time.

Historical context:

The Tabula Peutingeriana is the only surviving Roman road map showing the network of roads from Britain to India. The original map was created around the year 340, and its author may have been the Roman cartographer Kastoria. The map was discovered around 1489 in the Tegernsee monastery and was later named after Konrad Peutinger, the German humanist who first studied it.
