Details and context of the original map

Brief description of the map:

We present to you a beautiful view of Dubrovnik, a historical account of one of the most beautiful cities on the Adriatic. This veduta offers a detailed and artistic representation of Dubrovnik’s walls, port and urban landscape, thereby providing an insight into the appearance of the City during its glory days as the independent Republic of Dubrovnik.

Year of original:

within the 17th and 18th centuries

Original author:

Veduta was painted in the spirit of vedutism of the time – an artistic direction that was particularly popular in the 17th and 18th centuries, and focused on detailed, precise depictions of city panoramas.

Place of issue:

The most important center of Vedutism was Venice, which shaped the style and technique of the Vedutist movement. However, cities such as Rome, Naples, and Amsterdam also played a key role in the development of veduta. Dubrovnik was less represented, but due to its unique architecture, it was a frequent motif in the depictions of artists who visited the Mediterranean. If the veduta of Dubrovnik from the 17th or 18th century is associated with one of these centers, it would most likely be Venice.

Technique:

Copperplate engraving, hand-colored.

Content:

Dubrovnik defensive walls, Minčeta tower, Revelin, St. Ivan, town square and churches. The port and merchant ships are shown with special emphasis on the maritime significance of the city.

Historical context:

The Republic of Dubrovnik was a strong trading power that maintained neutrality and diplomatic relations with the great empires of that era. Vedutas like this one were made to celebrate the architectural beauty and strategic importance of the city, but also as a gift to travelers and merchants.

Importance and value:

This view of Dubrovnik is not only a historical document but also a work of art. The originals of such displays are rare and highly valued today, and their replicas often adorn the homes and offices of history and art lovers.

Each map includes a label with important information such as the year the original was created, what it depicts, who made the map, and where it was produced.:
