1570
Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598), prominent Flemish cartographer and geographer, known for creating the first modern atlas.
Antwerp, Belgium
Copperplate with colors added by hand, which allows a precise and detailed representation of geographical elements.
The map shows the area of Southeast Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, the Philippines, the Indonesian Islands, New Guinea and the northern coast of Australia. The islands of Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Celebes are particularly highlighted, with detailed depictions of coasts, rivers and mountain ranges. The edges of the map are decorated with illustrations of ships and sea monsters, characteristic of 16th century cartography.
In the middle of the 16th century, European explorers and traders intensively explored Southeast Asia, attracted by the wealth of spices and other resources. Ortelius’ map reflects the geographical knowledge and discoveries of the time, providing insight into the territorial layout of the region during that period. The map was part of Ortelius’ atlas “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”, the first modern atlas that standardized cartographic representations of the world.
This map is an important historical document that combines precise geographical information with artistic representation. Ortelius’ maps are prized for their accuracy and aesthetic value, and the originals are now rare and highly prized by collectors and historians. Replicas of such maps serve as valuable educational materials and decorative elements that evoke the historical spirit of the 16th century.
Each map includes a label with important information such as the year the original was created, what it depicts, who made the map, and where it was produced.:
